Postmodernism and Consumerism - Essay ExampleThe essay Postmodernism and Consumerism explores the definition of postmodernism and analyzes consumerism. Post-modernism defines our accepted state of human beings and encompasses ideas, attitudes, lifestyle and intellect that mark the contemporary world. However, there is widespread debate as to the definition of post-modernism. Some view it from the lens of defining it as a mere condition or state of existence whereas others view it as a constant movement and development. Those who believe in the second school of thought often tend to link post-modernism with consumerism, globalization, the birth of multinational corporations and the boundary less transfer of ideas, technology, products and information across the world. Some theorists even go as far as stating that the era of postmodernism does not parallel our current era. For instance, some theorists suggest that the society in which we dwell today is post traditionalist and not p ostmodern. This view is further advanced by some researchers who mark off todays world as pseudo-modern and by claim that the postmodern era does not exist. Fortress Ltd Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Fortress Ltd - Coursework ExampleA promoter of a association is an individualistic who undertakes to form a companion with reference to a given device and to see it going, and who takes the necessary steps to accomplish that purpose (Twycross v Grant 1877, 469). On the facts, Adam undertook to form Fortress Ltd. for the express purpose of securing a security services project for the Olympic games. All indications are that Adam intends to supervise the project and to ensure that it is accomplished. The mere fact that he is securing the loan for the proposed companys project substantiates his supervision of the project. Moreover, since the term promoter is essentially a business term, whether or not a person is a promoter is question of fact (Whaley Bridge Calico Printing Co. v Green 1880, 109). On the facts of the case for countersign and pursuant to common law, Adam is for all intents a purposes a promoter. In general a company cannot be held liable for the breach of a weight-l ift that was concluded prior to the companys incorporation (Kelner v Baxter1886 174). In cases where the contract was formed prior to the formation of the company, the person or promoters acting for the proposed company prior to its incorporation are generally liable in a personal capacity (Kelner v Baxter1886 174). ... This was particularly so when Section 36 (C) of the Companies procedure 1985 overruled the decision in Kelner v Baxter and essentially codified the decision in Phonogram Ltd. v Lane (1982). Section 36(C) which was further amended by Section 51 of the Companies movement 2006 provided that pre-incorporation contracts would have effect provided there were no agreements otherwise. In the absence of an agreement excluding liability, both the company and the promoter acting as agent would be liable for breach of the contract in a personal capacity (Companies Act 1985, Section 36(C)(1)). Section 36(C) (1) however, did not clear up the confusion as there was some confusion as to whether or not it was necessary for the wronged party to know that the company had not yet been incorporated (Bourne 2011, p. 48). For instance it was fixed in (Cotronic (UK) Ltd. v Dexonie 1991,721) that it must be shown that the defendant was purporting to act on behalf of a proposed company. In another case it held that liability as mutually liquid ecstasy in that both the third party acting on behalf of the proposed company and the other contracting party were equally liable for breach of the contract (Braymist Ltd. v Wise Finance Co. Ltd. 2002, 273). In other words, there was no definitive rule of law determining when and if a promoter could be liable for a breach of a pre-incorporation contract. There were instances where a promoter could be liable only if it was clear that the other contracting party did not know that the company was incorporated at the time of entering an agreement. In other instances, liability was assigned to the promoter automatically (Savirimuth u 2003, 203). As the law currently stands, Section 51(1) of the Companies Act 2006 will apply to determine

Medicalization of Deviance Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Medicalization of Deviance - Essay ExampleOne of the main reasons there has been a frequently stronger focus on medicalizing deviance is because the offenders who atomic number 18 in this category need a specific type of help to refrain them from continuing to break the justice and behaving outside of what is considered to be the social norm. Without medical intervention their behavior is un hold backlable and go forth continue to escalate unless they are placed on medication to control their specific cognitive problems. So, based on this assumption, when the terminology of medicalization is placed with deviance or deviant behavior it is under(a)stood that what is actually being implied is that those of deviant compositors case need specialized medical treatment such as certain neuro-chemical stabilizers to control their behaviors.Sociologists claim that by defining deviance in this way it will allow for an ability to be able to discover order far better in societies than sim ply following a traditional pattern of law and placing all of those of a disorderly character in a certain legal framework without proper labeling of the adversity being given. Further more than, when certain criminal activities are taken out of the main legal framework and analyzed it will be perceivable that for some there are medical reasons for their behavior speckle for others they simply are prone to violent actions and engage in crime because they want too and for no other reason. For others it is kinda the opposite, which is why there is a strong point for labeling some offenders under medical deviance. Conrad (1992, pg. 210) points out that it was in the mid 1970s when the concept of medicalization and activities of a deviant background were first were introduced, although there was not much headway in labeling offenders into this group at that time. However, now in present times the terminology has become quite common and even more pronounced, gaining precedence in claim ing that many crimes have a medical reason and therefore claiming medicalizing many deviant behaviors is not only arbitrarily conceivable, but it is quite logical to do. In Conrads article (1992) there is an emphasis on the fact that medicine can control deviant actions and many characteristics of it, which has been hinted at in this research. By applying the proper treatment regimen to those offenders who are engaging in deviant acts, the chemicals that are not reacting correctly in the brain can be adjusted by various pharmaceutical prescriptions. By counseling and regulating the medications, psychologists can monitor these previous offenders and almost guarantee that their actions wont be repeated as huge as they stay on the treatment prescribed to them. The definition of medicalization in itself shows, it is a process where more and more of everyday life has come under medical dominion, influence, and supervision (Conrad 1992, pg.210). Of course, as this research is showing ev en legal problems in society are now beginning to be associated with medicine and its treatments to maintain control. To extend this reasoning further, many psychiatrists, sociologists, and psychologists believe that a person who is committing deviant

Toor (2000 100) posit that the crisis started when at that place was mis-prioritization of govern ments agenda to extraction industry instead of agricultural programs. It was perceived that the decision of debt-ridden Musharrafs administration to under(a)go structural adjustment packages under the policies of World Bank-International Monetary Fund (WB-IMF) as one of the major causes of poverty. The adjustment trimmed down the budgetary subsidy for wheat production and exported produce to international markets, thus prompting farmers to divert to cash-crops farming to meet both ends (Toor, 2000 101). Said structural adjustment directly affected social services too, such as education, health, public utilities and transportation. Worst, as subsidy for agriculture was compacted, the percentage of taxes levied to people also increased but there is less empirical evidence of outcomes that augmented tax revenue contributed to vigorous delivery of social services in the country. Inflation of commodities coupled with agricultural devastation caused by disasters is seriously affecting them (UN, 2011). The situation is further compounded in the mid part of the millennium when the whole country suffered catastrophic destruction due to earthquakes and flood. away from this ecological concern, they are beset with heightening strain in Kashmir-- a region considered under territorial dispute (WFP, 2011) although the region is currently deployed with peacekeepers to diffuse tension among claimant countries China (Aksai Chin), India (Jammu and Kashmir), and Pakistan (Azad Kashmir and Northern Areas) (WFP, 2011). Moreover, Pakistan is also host of Afghan refugees estimated at 1.05 million of displaced population. Due to domestic conflict, the country also suffered millions of displacement in 2010 (WFP, 2011).

rooster principle - Research Paper Exampleo the skills essential for a specific mail service of employment, and this idea was non taken into account in the supposedly common sense beliefs of traditional promotions. While the idea was first proposed with a humorous edge, the true implications of the theory were not that funny. The jibe Principle may expose an inherent flaw in the hierarchical promotion system that is use by many companies.Promotions may come from within a company that operates in an employment hierarchy. When this is the case, we may be tempted to believe that a person has been promoted because they atomic number 18 the best followting candidate for the tasks associated with the position. However, it is just as likely that the promoted employee was selected for overall competence, rather than for any position-specific qualities. The lack of the required skill-set, as related to a position recently obtained through promotion, to perform a job effectively will con sistently produce results that highlight the promoted candidates newfound incompetence. However, according to Dr. Peter, these employees would not face a risk of job termination unless they were so incompetent that it basically defines their being. Any level of incompetence below this line would simply fit in with other instances of promotions that are not based on specific skill sets, leaving us with a business that is defined by mediocrity. The Peter Principle has brought concern to many organizations that operate in a hierarchical manner, and as a result there have been studies developed with the goal of counteracting this effect. A 2010 study (Pluchino, Rapisarda, and Garofalo 467) discusses the principle and how its accuracy would indicate a high level of company-wide inefficiency taking place in many organizations. The researchers used a complicated computational model to test the efficiency of several promotional strategies that could be employed within a companys hierarchy by their resistance to the Peter Principle. The results showed

Race and your Community - Research Paper ExampleThe population of New York City is about 8 million peck. All of them belong to opposite races and ethnic groups, so some of them look like me, but the majority of the population differs greatly (Crenshaw et al 1996). Diverse world views cause persons to selectively process to information and to perceive similar information differently, though the same kinds of information are potentially available to each person regardless of race. Thus, racial identity element models propose that the earlier stages (or the mono-racial types) are associated with poorer ad on the dotment than later stages because in the earlier stages, the person has to expend considerable energy in screening out or denying potentially identity-shattering information (Schaefer 2006). Ethnic diversity is a historical process in New York so the majority of people treat other people as equals (Aronson, 2007).The leaders within my community treat white people the same wa y as other races and nationalities paying no attention to racial differences. Racial identification issues per se are not likely to be the primary concerns. Although racial issues will not automatically disappear from her or his life, she or he is not afraid to tackle them when they occur. Moreover, her or his life issues are now centered around becoming the best person he or she can become rather than the best Black person because such dichotomies no longer have meaning for her or him. In seeking a counselor, the Internalizing client may prefer a Black counselor, but he or she will judge the counselor regardless of his or her race on the basis of the quality of her or his demonstrated skills. Likewise, the Internalizing counselor no longer regards the clients race as either a major asset or deficit. It just is (Crenshaw et al 1996). Evidence of Bergman’s Rule in Indigenous Inhabitants of Different Climates Essay Example for Free

Evidence of Bergmans Rule in Indigenous Inhabitants of Different Climates experimentFrom a laymans point of view, Bergmanns Rule could be quiet evident in the differences of anatomical physiques of people near the equator and inhabitants of the arctic region. Nordic and Eskimos have relatively larger body mass than the indigenous peoples of the Congo or Papua New Guinea. There are other noticeable differences as well. nonpareil of these is postulated by Allens rule which states that populations of a geographically widespread species living in warm regions will have longer extremities (arms and legs) than those living in frigid regions. On other species, Peter Mayhew came up with the following finding that for bird species, there was a pattern on the variables associated with latitude and body size, though not ubiquitous, that would reinforce Bergmanns Rule (Mayhew, 2006, p. 70).ReferencesRittner, Don and MacCabe, Timothy L. 2004, Encyclopedia of Biology, New York H. The use of tall smoke stack is also believed to contribute to a wider spread of air pollutants.2. How can topography contribute to pollution in a urban center or region?Topography and weather are big contributors to a city pollutions. From where do hurricanes derive their elan vital? What factors tend to weaken hurricanes? Would you expect a hurricane to weaken more quickly if it m oved everywhere land or over cooler water?Hurricanes derive their energy from the cordially, tropical oceans and by evaporating water from the oceans surface. Heat energy is converted to wind energy when the water vapor condenses and latent heat is released inside deep convective clouds (Ahrens, 2014, p. 341). Hurricanes can weaken more quickly if it moves over cooler water, because they get their energy from warm tropical oceans.4. Where is the Bermuda high located during the summer and fall? How might the path of a hurricane, moving toward the west from Africa, be affected by the Bermuda High as the hurricane approaches the United States?During the summer and fall the Bermuda high forms over the Atlantic Ocean. The Bermuda High not only heats up summer-time temperatures in the East, but the Bermuda High can affect theintensity of tropical storms and hurricanes (Bermuda, 2 013).5. How do you think pollutants are removed from the atmosphere? Does this make out quickly or slowly?Pollutants in the atmosphere can be removed by trees and plants. The trees and plants absorb CO2 and other pollutants, then produce oxygen for the atmosphere. The removing of pollutants in the air is a slow progress and some pollutants never go away.Ahrens, C. D. Historical Systems of Power, Governance, and Authority Essay Example for Free

Historical Systems of Power, Governance, and Authority EssayA.The rise of new imperialism of the 19th and early twentieth century involved Europe going into Africa. The causes of imperialism in Africa were partly due to the decolonization in America. The European powers were show up policy-making and economic seduce by the United States gaining their independence. In 1876 European powers especially King Leopold II of Belgium, agreed in the Berlin Conference to split up the land in Africa, no thirster invading to colonize but to gain policy-making, military and economic power. The methods to imperialism of the African land were done differently, by each European power. The British who imperialized the cape of Africa utilise laws and indirect methods to gain power, however King Leopold II used extreme force to gain control of the Congo. The Congo was then ruled with strict political control and military force.A1.Between the years 1885 and 1905 more than 10 million indigenous people of Congo were murdered. King Leopold II used the natives as slave labor to gain resources such as rubber and ivory. Edward Morel an official that monitored shipping traffic started noticing that King Leopold II ships came back with tons of cargo, but little to no cargo was being sent to the Congo for trade. Morel soon put two and two together and realized the native people were being used as slave labor. In doing so Morel soon started to organize a protest. Other than the protest that Morel started the people of Congo were silent, due to many years of off and on again use as slave laborers.B.The Russian vicissitude of 1917 was a violent gyration and in comparison to the Indian Independence Movement was a nonviolent revolution both had causes and goals that will be discussed. To begin, the Russian Revolution of 1917 was caused by food shortages and the peoples opposition to thegovernment, ran by Nicolas II who was czar. Czar Nicolas II had pushed into field War I leaving the people in Russia in anguish due to the many losses and economic downfall. This downfall came due to the amount of pass and horses being placed into the war leaving the peasants at home with a loss of man power to continue a, standard of living( Causes of the Russian Revolution 2). collectible to the decrease in man power, and materials to use at the home front, prices increased and a hunger endemic began. With hunger increasing and inflation of prices continuing strikes began, which in the end stopped transportation. When the transportation stopped supplies and food did not get to the soldiers at war decreasing the amount of people who believed in the czar. The goal of the peasants of the Russian Revolution of 1917, was to gain a new leader and for their voices to be heard. In March 1917, a riot of peasants, and soldiers stormed the streets with the support of the Duma, a group of government officials, forcing Nicolas II out of power. The Indian Independence Movement was a nonv iolent revolution that gained Indias independence in August 15, 1947 from Britain, French and Portugal. The start of the revolution began in 1857 when Indian soldiers rebelled against the British East Indian Company when Indian political rights were not being honored, however British squashed the matter. Eventually, non- violent reasons began in 1918-1922 when, suppression of civil liberties, political rights and culture, were not being recognized by the British (Sharma, S. (2010)).The movement was led by the Indian National Congress who were under the direct leadership of Mohandas Ganghi. The movement held a revolt in 1942, demanding that the British leave India, known as the Quit India Movement, due to the riot in Calcutta, Independence was finally gained(Sharma, S. (2010)). The goal of the revolution was finally met to gain civil liberties, political integrity and have Indian culture recognized. B1.The strategies of the two revolution discussed above include a riot in the Russi an Revolution of 1917. In the riot peasants, soldiers and the Duma stood together to over throw the czar. In the Indian Independence Movement the strategies were to use boycotts and stances against the British force togain their independence.ReferencesCauses of the Russian Revolution of February/March 1917. In A Moment Of Self Discovery English Literature Essay

In A Moment Of Self Discovery English Literature EssayIn Henrik Ibsens A Doll House, Nora experiences a quick epiphany at the dnouement of the play this moves the piece forward into the resolution (at least for Nora). This final scene is compressed into Aristotles possibleness of tragedy of a complex plot. The actions between Nora and Torvald surprise the audience in several manners, while continuing the story. The act of reading Krogstads second letter veritable by the maid contributes to preipeteia. This occurs because Krogstad produced a letter of amnesty, an effect opposite to which he intended to produce, originally wanting to expose Noras debt to him and longing for Helmers new job. This event expedites the next, anagnorisis, allowing Noras epiphany to keep place, producing conflict between herself and Torvald. Noras new perspective places Torvald into confusion, trying to say her personal revelationHELMER (sitting at the table directly opposite her). Youworry me, Nora. An d I dont understand you.HELMER. How do you mean that?HELMER. Whats that?1The affect of a complex plot, or the cause-and-effect chain led to catastrophe. In terms of A Doll House, Nora leaves, slamming the door shut, abandoning the suffering Torvald thus, carry the complex plot to an ending.Antigone, in addition has a moment of anagnorisis in her final soliloquy of Sophocles Oedipus trilogy. She strongizes that no one is there to save her from her metaphoric death, or literally the entombment. Seeking help from man and gods, she receives nothing but sympathetic feelings from the Theban elders perhaps being victim of the Oedipus family curse. Having been abandoned by all, her personal wail outlines her sacrifice for her brother, the hypothetical actions performed with a future husband (Haemon) and children, the love of her family, and a curse upon Creon. Acting upon the peripeteia of Creons punishment in the third episode, her soliloquy provides a chance of self-discovery in the ne xt episode of the play. This chain of effects creates the catastrophe within Antigone, leading to Creons suffering of both Haemons and Eurydices death in the exodos. Antigones epiphany of loneliness affects the plot because of her own death and the curse set on Creon. His grievance over family suicides progresses the plot, feeling ashamed for all he has done.Comparing both tragedys they use anagnorisis in the female protagonists, later influencing plot. In Aristotles view, plot is most important priority of a tragedy. Seemingly, both plays use a complex plot structure in the lusis of action. Ibsen compresses this unravelling in the last ten pages of the tragedy, compared to Sophocles expanded over six separate scenes. The agency of self-discovery is defined as the change from ignorance to knowledge and Nora goes through a some(prenominal) more rational process than Antigone. Noras naivet stems from how she is treated as a woman. Her knowledge is gained through and used against Torv ald, explaining her shoot of consciousness before leaving the family. Noras epiphany has a littler affect on character and plot outcome, as Antigones anagnorisis is overwhelming with the affects ranging for the rest of the play. At first, our Greek protagonist assumes that burying her brother Polynices is justifiable through the gods, but earthly laws state it is illegal. Therefore, when she is brought back to Creon to hear her final outcome, a life and death situation, her mindset changes. Accepting her actions and the chaotic environment around her, she kills herself so she female genitals be with her loving family. Nora and Antigones anagnorisis leads to more actions, the catastrophe however, it is Antigones reaction to it that stands out because it leads suicide. In addition, the effect of the female self-discovery affects their male opposite detrimentally. In A Doll House, Torvald is left field sitting alone, bewildered. in contrast Creon is left with no family. His son and wife are dead. The use of anagnorisis in A Doll House and in Antigone check the plot, but it is Sophocles Antigone that dramatizes the affect of self-discovery, leading to multiple deaths and Creons sorrow.Comparison between plot development/complexityCharacterization with self-discoveryNoraShe wants a new life with a real meaningShe can only have a real life outside of the house,Within the house she is trapped, she doesnt like Torvalds care for herHer epiphany stems from the way Torvald acts, and what he give tongue toHe is not emotionally devoted to herBut it devoted on how he can play with or handle her life, like the fatherTransforming into a new woman, with her new found independenceShe cannot stand being controlled anymoreCharacterization through inner thoughts and feelings that are expressed through dialogueTorvald initiates her stream of consciousness and reasoningShe becomes stronger as an independent womanChallenging society and Torvald/rulesThe conflicting views of hono ur and womenAntigoneHer self-discovery only contains anagnorisisShe realizes that she is alone and cannot be saved by anyoneIn normal spoken verse, a solliliquy is said by herRecollecting on the main thoughts on the tragedy of this playBurying her dead brother sending him to the underworld, in return she dies because of her unlawful actionsAlthough respecting the gods, she didnt receive the same respect on earthCompare and Contrast the characterization effectsConlcusion
